Design statement
This design is a direct collaboration with the choreographer, translating their thematic ideas into a compelling visual narrative. Inspired by concepts such as shadow puppets, indoctrination, and the tension between the individual and the group, I worked closely with the choreographer to bring her vision to life. The larger-than-life shadow projections were designed to evoke feelings of power, control, and collective identity, seamlessly integrating with the dancers’ movements to enhance the storytelling.
By incorporating elements like the looming shadowed hands, I emphasized the choreographer’s exploration of "Who is in control?" and the duality of community versus individuality. The interplay of light and shadow reflects the theme of eclipse and transformation, aligning with the choreographer's idea of purging and renewal through collective action.
This project showcases my ability to take abstract ideas and collaboratively shape them into a cohesive and impactful design, enhancing the audience's experience while staying true to the artistic vision. Through open communication and a shared creative process, I ensured the design amplified the choreographer's emotional and thematic depth.
